Florida Family Awarded $14.7 Million Nursing Home Verdict

NursingHome2

Nursing homes are supposed to be top-notch care facilities for those who are elderly or disabled, but sadly, this is not always the case. An 82-year-old nursing home resident’s family alleged that he suffered severe neglect while living at Krystal Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation, a North Miami Beach care facility. The man ultimately developed serious pressure wounds that contributed to his death.

According to family members, concerns about his condition became evident when he was transferred to a hospital for heart-related issues. They said medical staff were alarmed by the extent of his wounds and questioned whether he had been receiving appropriate care. The resident died shortly after being hospitalized.

In February 2026, three years after the man’s death, a Miami-Dade County jury awarded the family $14.7 million in a wrongful death lawsuit against the nursing home’s former owner and management company. The verdict is among the largest nursing home negligence awards in the county and was intended to compensate the family for the loss of their loved one.

Despite the verdict, collecting the judgment may prove difficult. Attorneys involved in the case say the limited liability companies that owned and managed Krystal Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation at the time have since been dissolved. The nursing home remains open under a different name and ownership.

Legal advocates note that while Florida nursing homes are required to carry liability insurance to maintain their licenses, state law does not require a minimum coverage amount. As a result, some facilities may have little or no insurance available to satisfy large court judgments.

The family’s attorney claims the defendants failed to participate in the lawsuit and is now pursuing additional legal avenues to recover the award. He argues that dissolving corporate entities should not shield nursing home operators from accountability for alleged neglect.

The resident had lived at the facility for approximately two years. Family members said they repeatedly questioned the quality of care he was receiving and recalled finding him on the floor during one visit. They believe the facility failed to provide the level of care and attention he needed.

The case is not the only lawsuit involving Krystal Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation. Since 2019, multiple families have filed negligence or wrongful death claims related to residents at the same facility. Other lawsuits have resulted in judgments, settlements, and ongoing collection efforts. Former employees and a labor union have also pursued claims alleging unpaid compensation and labor violations connected to changes in facility ownership.

Situations like this highlight a broader concern within Florida’s long-term care industry. Even when families obtain substantial jury verdicts, they may face significant challenges collecting damages if facility owners dissolve companies, transfer operations, or lack sufficient insurance coverage.
