Summertime Is Coming, Time To Prevent Drownings

Pool5

We’re technically still in spring, but temperatures are heating up in Florida. Temperatures are already hitting the 90s in some areas, which means pool season is upon us.

Many of us enjoy lounging by the pool on a sunny day or hosting pool parties with friends and neighbors. Some Florida residents spend their time at public pools and water parks.

Sadly, a fun time at the pool can lead to a visit to the emergency room – or worse yet, a fatality. Drownings are common, especially among young children, who generally cannot swim well. Unfortunately, drownings are on the rise in many parts of the country, such as Florida. In fact, 2021 was a record for drownings in the state which is alarming considering that Florida is at or near the top of the list every year.

Ninety-eight children drowned in Florida last year, and most were between the ages of 1 and 8 years old. While many people think of swimming as a recreational activity, it needs to be seen as a survival skill for small children.

That’s why many pools in Tallahassee and the surrounding areas are offering swim lessons this summer. If you have children, this summer may be a good time to teach them basic swimming skills. And if you don’t know how to swim, you can join in on the fun as well. The swim lessons are geared toward the older crowd as well, and statistics show that as many as 20% of adults don’t know how to swim.

The legal implications of a pool related injury or death can be complex. Florida laws require homeowners with pools to have safeguards put in place such as fencing. The following link provides regulations and guidelines that assist in determining whether you are providing the proper protection for individuals who access your pool.
