Man Killed in Three-Wheeled Motorcycle Crash on Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Motorcycles can be dangerous if not handled properly. Even three-wheeled motorcycles can get into fatal crashes.
Sadly, this was recently the case on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. An elderly man was killed in a motorcycle crash on the afternoon of April 5.
The incident occurred in the northbound lanes near Milepost 12. The rider, a 76-year-old man from Pinellas Park, was operating a three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle when he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a collision with an unidentified vehicle.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that the motorcyclist swerved to evade the unknown vehicle and veered onto the shoulder of the bridge. During this maneuver, the motorcycle struck the outside guardrail. The impact caused the vehicle to reenter the roadway, where it came to rest in the outside northbound lane.
The force of the crash ejected the rider from the motorcycle. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the accident scene. Authorities have not released his identity.
The crash led to the closure of the northbound lanes of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for several hours as emergency crews responded and investigators worked the scene. Traffic was significantly impacted throughout the afternoon, with lanes reopening shortly after 5 p.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash and is trying to identify the unknown vehicle involved in the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact authorities.
Safety Tips for Three-Wheeled Motorcycles
This incident underscores the dangers motorcyclists face, particularly on high-speed roadways and bridges. Sudden evasive maneuvers, roadway conditions, and interactions with other vehicles can quickly lead to loss of control, especially for three-wheeled motorcycles, which handle differently than traditional two-wheeled bikes.
Three-wheeled motorcycles offer increased stability compared to traditional two-wheel bikes, but they come with their own unique handling characteristics and safety risks. Understanding these differences is essential for staying safe on the road.
Unlike standard motorcycles, three-wheeled models do not require balancing at stops and are less prone to tipping over at low speeds. However, they do not lean into turns the same way, which can affect cornering and maneuverability. Riders must rely more on steering input and body positioning.
Common safety issues include:
- Oversteering or understeering: Because three-wheel motorcycles steer more like a car or ATV, sharp turns at high speeds can lead to loss of control.
- Higher center of gravity: Some models are more prone to tipping during aggressive cornering.
- Driver inexperience: Riders transitioning from two wheels may misjudge turning dynamics.
- Road hazards: Gravel, wet surfaces, and strong crosswinds, especially on bridges, can still destabilize the vehicle.
