Motorcyclist Injured in Bradenton Crash

When turning a vehicle, it is important to watch where you are going. Many drivers make turns and run into motorcycles, often causing serious injuries.
This recently happened in Bradenton. A motorcyclist was seriously injured after colliding with a sedan. The accident occurred on the afternoon of November 9 at the intersection of State Road 64 and River Heritage Boulevard.
A 75-year-old woman from Bradenton was driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on State Road 64 with a passenger, a 73-year-old man. At the same time, a 28-year-old man from Parrish was traveling east on a motorcycle toward the same intersection.
As both vehicles approached River Heritage Boulevard, the Toyota entered the left-turn lane to access a nearby neighborhood. When the driver began turning, she moved directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The motorcyclist attempted to brake and swerve, but the sudden movement left no time to avoid a collision.
The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Toyota. The rider was ejected and thrown onto the roadway.
Manatee County EMS and the Florida Highway Patrol responded and airlifted the motorcyclist by Bay-Flight to Blake Hospital. He is currently in critical condition. The occupants of the Toyota suffered minor injuries. Both remained at the accident scene and cooperated with authorities.
Portions of State Road 64 were temporarily closed while investigators conducted a crash reconstruction and cleared debris. The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the accident.
Dangers of Left Turns
Left turns are one of the most dangerous maneuvers drivers make, and they play a major role in serious collisions at intersections. While the action may seem routine, it requires precise timing, clear visibility, and sound judgment, all of which can be compromised in fast-moving or congested traffic.
One of the biggest dangers comes from misjudging the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles. Even a small error can leave a driver turning directly into another car, motorcycle, or truck’s path, resulting in a high-impact, often side-angle crash. Motorcyclists are especially at risk because they are smaller, harder to see, and more likely to be overlooked by a turning driver.
Left turns also force drivers to cut across opposing lanes of traffic, which increases the chances of a T-bone collision. These side-impact crashes tend to cause severe injuries because the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front or rear. Poor visibility can make it even harder to judge a safe gap.
Traffic signals and turn lanes help, but even with a green light, a driver must yield to oncoming traffic before turning. Impatience, distraction, rushing through a yellow light, or assuming another vehicle will slow down are common behaviors that lead to preventable crashes.
