Kanye West Sued For Breaching Rental Contract

BreachContract

People enter contracts all the time. They may do so to have the terms of a project or agreement in writing so that it is valid. Contracts are used for construction projects, employment, and for renting space and equipment. It is assumed that all parties will abide by the contract. When they fail to do so, it is called breach of contract and it can be a serious legal matter.

Celebrities can be accused of breach of contract. This appears to be the case for rapper Kanye West, who has been sued for allegedly failing to pay for a rental space in Florida. He wanted to use a space in Miami as a recording studio back in January. The lawsuit, filed by Surface Media, LLC, said West agreed to rent the studio for 25 days at a rate of $5,000 per day but failed to pay the total of $145,813.

The space is located in the Miami Design District and it is described as a shoppable showroom that features a curated art collection as well as design objects and furniture. By day, it’s used as a content studio. At night, it becomes a venue for live events.

There does not appear to be a written agreement in place, though, as the parties allegedly agreed to the rental via telephone and text message. However, Charles Misodi Njapa, a rapper who is known as 88-Keys, served as an agent and rented the space on West’s behalf.

West had discussed customizing the space. He had requested that staff move art pieces and furniture from the space and bring in other furniture to match his desired color scheme. Surface Media employees essentially transformed its art studio into a recording studio overnight. They promptly brought in sound equipment and made other accommodations for West. The employees worked hard to meet his needs but incurred significant costs to do so.

West’s collaborators used the studio. Afterward, his team abandoned the deal and never paid Surface Media. Nobody from the company received a penny from West. Now Surface Media is asking for the payment they were promised by West. They worked hard to customize this unique space to meet his needs. Surface Media hopes that the matter can be resolved quickly, but the company will not bear West’s financial burden. The lawsuit is asking for $145,813 in damages as well as any other relief the court deems appropriate.
