Teen Dies in Palmetto Crash After Eluding Police

Sadly, this was recently the case in Palmetto. An 18-year-old driver in a stolen car was killed in a crash following a high-speed pursuit with deputies in southwest Florida. The incident occurred on the evening of January 5.

Law enforcement received an alert about a stolen vehicle in Hillsborough County. Deputies later spotted the car on U.S. 41 in Palmetto. When deputies confirmed the vehicle was stolen and activated their lights to stop it, the driver initially slowed down. He then made a U-turn at 7th Street and U.S. 41 and turned onto 17th Street East.

The vehicle continued about a half mile ahead of the deputies until it rear-ended another car. The stolen vehicle spun out and rolled several times as a result of the impact, ending up off the roadway. It came to rest in front of a nearby residence.

First responders extricated the driver, identified as an 18-year-old man from Ruskin. He was unconscious at the accident scene and taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The driver of the other vehicle, a 24-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
