Driver Hospitalized After Car Slams Into Bradenton Shopping Center

Crashes into buildings may seem funny to some people, but they are no laughing matter. They can cause significant injuries, vehicle damage, and damage to buildings, forcing businesses to shut down temporarily.

A driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a car crashed into a shopping plaza in Bradenton. The accident prompted an emergency response and the temporary evacuation of a nearby restaurant.

The crash happened on September 6 at Cortez Village Plaza, located at 6670 Cortez Road West. Police officers from the Bradenton Police Department and Bradenton Fire Department crews responded after a vehicle traveled into one of the buildings at the shopping center. Photos from the scene showed a Buick Verano lodged inside a damaged storefront as emergency responders worked around the vehicle and building.

The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment. The injuries have been described as non-life-threatening. Authorities did not provide additional information about the person’s condition.

The business struck by the vehicle was closed when the collision occurred. Fortunately, no employees or customers were inside the storefront at the time.

As a precaution, emergency personnel evacuated a nearby restaurant while they assessed the damage and determined whether the building remained safe for occupants. No injuries were reported among restaurant patrons, employees or other people at the shopping plaza.

It was not immediately clear what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and crash into the building. Authorities have not said whether speed, a mechanical problem, a medical emergency or another factor contributed to the collision.

Officials have not released an estimate of the property damage or said when the affected storefront or nearby businesses might be able to reopen. The crash is still under investigation.
