Dog Owner Charged in Mauling Death of Woman

This recently happened in Florida. A woman died in May after being attacked by two dogs that neighbors say had been a longstanding threat to their community. Following the fatal incident, authorities arrested the dogs’ owner, and she is now in jail. The animals have been taken into custody by county animal services. Officials have indicated that the dogs will be euthanized.

Residents of Blue Bonnet Drive said the dogs, identified as Max and Mako, had repeatedly escaped from their owner’s property and frightened people in the neighborhood. According to neighbors, concerns about the animals had been raised numerous times before the deadly attack occurred.

The victim, a 50-year-old woman, had reportedly lived in the neighborhood for just two weeks when she was mauled by the dogs. The woman was attempting to protect a smaller dog when the larger animals attacked her. Authorities allege the dogs knocked her to the ground, inflicted severe injuries, and dragged her a considerable distance during the attack.

The woman suffered catastrophic injuries. She was taken to a nearby trauma center, where she died four hours later. The smaller dog she was trying to protect was not injured.

Sheriff’s investigators later determined that the dogs’ owner was aware the animals had escaped from the property on multiple occasions. Authorities allege the owner had received citations from animal services and knew of at least one previous incident in which one of the dogs bit a neighbor who required medical treatment.

Records show that since October 2024, law enforcement and animal control officials had received numerous complaints involving the dogs. Residents reported concerns ranging from the animals roaming freely through the neighborhood to fears that they posed a danger to public safety.

Officials stated that inspections of the property found adequate food and water for the animals and no evidence of neglect. However, investigators say that sufficient measures were not taken to prevent the dogs from repeatedly escaping.

The case has also renewed discussion about Florida’s dangerous dog laws. Animal control officers have limited authority to remove dogs from owners solely because the animals repeatedly escape or are involved in less severe biting incidents. Under current law, enforcement actions often begin with citations and fines, and the ability to designate a dog as dangerous depends largely on the severity of an attack rather than the number of prior incidents.

The fatal attack has also prompted renewed scrutiny of whether existing laws provide adequate protections for communities facing repeated complaints about aggressive animals.
