Tips for Consumers to Avoid Utility Scams

Tips

As Florida continues to rank among the nation’s leaders in fraud complaints, Florida Power & Light (FPL) is warning residents to stay alert for increasingly sophisticated utility scams targeting both homeowners and businesses.

According to consumer protection officials, scammers frequently impersonate utility company representatives through phone calls, text messages, emails, fake websites, and even in-person visits. Many of these schemes rely on fear and urgency, with fraudsters threatening immediate power shutoffs unless victims send payment right away.

FPL says one of the most common warning signs is a demand for unusual payment methods. Legitimate utility companies will not require customers to pay using gift cards, cryptocurrency, prepaid debit cards, Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, or wire transfers. Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly before they have time to verify the request.

The company also warns customers not to trust caller ID alone because scammers can manipulate phone numbers to appear as though the call is coming from FPL. Instead, customers should contact the utility company directly using the phone number listed on their monthly bill or on the company’s official website.

Online scams have also become more advanced. Fraudsters may create fake websites or post fraudulent customer service phone numbers online to trick customers into providing personal information or making payments. FPL advises customers to avoid relying on search engine results for contact information and instead use verified account documents or official company resources.

Customers are also urged to be cautious of unsolicited door-to-door visits. FPL says legitimate employees and contractors carry identification and will never aggressively demand payment at a customer’s home or business. Residents should immediately contact law enforcement if someone without proper identification attempts to collect money or pressures them into purchasing products or services.

Consumer advocates say utility scams are effective because they create panic and confusion. Criminals often target older adults, small business owners, and people who fear losing essential services such as electricity or water. Utility scam prevention groups recommend slowing down, independently verifying account information, and refusing to make rushed payments under pressure.

FPL is doing its part to protect customers. The utility company works to ensure customer information remains secure and confidential. It works closely with local and state law enforcement agencies to investigate scams. It uses customer reports to identify fraud trends that can lead to investigations and arrests.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact local law enforcement, the Federal Trade Commission, and their utility provider immediately.
