Toddler Survives Being Mauled by Family Dog; Dog Euthanized

Nobody wants to hear that a child got bitten by their own dog, but it happens often, unfortunately. This recently happened in Florida. While the dog had to be euthanized, the child is expected to make a full recovery.
The 1-year-old child was mauled by a family dog in Hallandale Beach. The incident happened on February 20 at a home in the 400 block of Southeast 9th Street.
The child was being changed by their mother when the family dog attacked them. The quick-thinking mother was able to separate the two and pull the child away from the dog.
The attack left blood stains in the area. A good Samaritan drove the mother and child to Aventura Hospital. The child was then airlifted to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The child is expected to recover.
The dog, an American Bully, was placed in the custody of Broward County Animal Care and Control. It was euthanized the following day. According to the father, the dog never showed signs of aggression prior to the attack.
An Animal Care and Control official commented on the case and said that children are often the target of dog bites because of their interactions with pets. Adults tend to have appropriate interactions with pets, and they know what to look for with pets when pets are feeling uncomfortable. Children tend to act in a way that seems natural to them but intimidating to dogs.
What to Know About American Bully Dogs
The terms pit bull and American bully are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Pit bulls are an older breed, while the American Bully has only recently become a recognized breed (in 2013). American Bullies are known as companion dogs that combine the American Pitbull Terrier, the American Bulldog, the Olde English Bulldogge, and the English Bulldog.
American Bully dogs often get labeled as “aggressive,” but not all are. Many are naturally friendly and loyal. It depends on factors such as:
- Training and socialization. Like any dog, behavior depends heavily on:
- Early socialization (meeting people and other animals).
- Consistent training.
- Owner behavior.
Dogs that are not properly trained or are isolated can develop fear-based or defensive aggression.
- Factors that can increase aggressive behavior include:
- Neglect or abuse.
- Being trained to guard or intimidate.
- Lack of exercise or stimulation.
- Poor living conditions.
Even the calmest breed can become aggressive in the wrong environment.
