Florida Woman Killed After Being Mauled by 2 Dogs

DogBreeds

Dogs are not always sweet and friendly. Some attack other people, causing fatal injuries.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Florida. A 50-year-old woman from Cocoa died after a devastating dog attack while walking her small dog near her home in the early morning hours of May 19. Two larger dogs, identified as mixed breeds, reportedly chased her onto the street before attacking her.

The woman was airlifted to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The dogs were seized by animal control, and the incident remains under investigation.

The woman’s longtime partner said he heard her cries for help and rushed outside, where he allegedly saw the dogs dragging her across the roadway. He saw the woman lying in a pool of blood with dog bites all over her body. He attempted to fight the animals off and provide first aid while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. Despite those efforts, the woman’s injuries proved fatal.

Neighbors told local media that concerns had previously been raised about the dogs’ aggressive behavior. Reports indicate that animal control and law enforcement had received complaints before the fatal attack, a detail that has led to questions from residents about whether more could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

Under Florida law, dogs involved in a fatal attack may be quarantined and investigated, and owners can face criminal penalties in certain circumstances if authorities determine legal requirements were violated. As of the latest reports, no charges had been announced

Florida Dog Bite Laws

Florida is a strict liability state for dog bites. This means a dog owner can be held responsible for injuries caused by a bite even if the dog had never bitten anyone before and the owner had no prior knowledge of aggressive behavior. The injured person generally must have been in a public place or lawfully on private property when the attack occurred.

A dog bite victim typically needs to show that:

  • The dog bit them.
  • They were lawfully present where the attack occurred.
  • They suffered injuries and damages as a result.

Unlike “one-bite rule” states, Florida law does not require proof that the owner knew the dog was dangerous.

Florida has additional laws for dogs classified as “dangerous.” A dog may be designated dangerous if it has aggressively attacked, severely injured, or threatened people without provocation. Owners of dangerous dogs must comply with strict confinement and safety requirements.

If a dog previously declared dangerous attacks a person without provocation, the owner may face criminal penalties, and the dog can be confiscated and destroyed.
