Elderly Woman Killed in Car Accident in Manatee County

CraCrash

Cars can crash on the roadway at any time. But when two SUVs collide, the results can be devastating and even deadly. Sadly, this was recently the case in Florida when a woman was killed in a crash involving two SUVs.

The fatal accident occurred on the evening of September 7 on U.S. 41, near the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. A woman was driving an SUV west on the driveway access of 8431 North Tamiami Trail. That was when a second SUV was heading north on U.S. 41 toward

Seagate Drive. The driver of the first SUV, an 81-year-old woman from Sarasota, pulled out in front of the second SUV. She attempted to turn south onto U.S. 41, causing the two vehicles to collide.

The front of the second SUV collided with the left side of the 81-year-old’s SUV. That SUV also had an 84-year-old passenger. The 81-year-old died at the accident scene.

The 84-year-old passenger and the 54-year-old driver of the second SUV suffered minor injuries. The accident is still under investigation.

Dangers of SUVs

American roadways are dangerous for everyone. Drivers, pedestrians, and pedestrians are getting injured and killed at high rates due to the size of vehicles on the road.

Large SUVs and pickup trucks are often considered to be safer than smaller vehicles. While this may be true for the vehicle occupants, these vehicles are likely to cause a lot of damage. They have a tendency to seriously injure or kill pedestrians due to their taller front ends as well as higher weight.

While there are drivers who love sports cars and sedans, that number is low compared to the number of Americans who love big vehicles. Reports show that more than 80% of new car sales in the United States are SUVs and pickups. Having so many of these large vehicles on the road is scary for pedestrians as well as for those in smaller vehicles.

But even drivers and occupants of SUVs may not be safe from the dangers. SUVs, pickups, and vans are most likely to sustain rollover accidents because of their tall and narrow build. SUV rollover risk is high due to their high center of gravity. Their balance and stability is greatly affected.

In a rollover accident, the occupants are thrown violently about the vehicle, causing serious injuries. If an occupant is not wearing a seatbelt, they can be ejected from the vehicle, which can be fatal.

Even in 2023, SUV rollover risk is high. Manufacturers are working to improve safety, but they still have a long way to go.
